Denton Dance Conservatory (DDC) is now in its 22nd year of operation. Founded in 1988 by Owner/Director, Lisa Racina-Torre, DDC has become THE place to educate your dancer in Denton, Texas! Dancers, ages 4+ have found their dance “home” at DDC no matter what their dancing goals! We have graduates of Denton Dance Conservatory that have gone on to major college dance programs throughout the country, as well as pursuing professional careers in the dance arts.
Denton Dance Conservatory subscribes to teaching through positive reinforcement and nurturing in order to produce a life-long respect and love for dance as well as very happy and well-trained young dancers. The studio’s Owner/Founder, Lisa Racina has developed a classical ballet curriculum based on the Vaganova and Cecchetti techniques, as well as a highly respected Modern dance program that gives young people the strength, technical knowledge, flexibility, and creativity to dance to their fullest potential. DDC offers classes in ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and pilates.
When you become part of DDC’s dance family, your dancer will have the opportunity to perform in Racina’s holiday ballet, “A Gift for Emma,” (see more under Performance Information) sponsored by Denton Dance Conservatory’s resident non-profit dance company, The Denton City Contemporary Ballet and youth company, the Denton Youth City Ballet (see more under Performing Companies). Your dancer will also perform in the studio Annual Recital Showcase held in early-mid June annually. DDC’s dancers have also performed in every Denton Arts and Jazz Festival during the last 20 years! Other community and area performances have included the Denton’s annual Blues Festival, the Selwyn Fall Festival, Dance for the Planet in Dallas, Oktoberfest in Ft. Worth, Denton Community Theatre and Music Theatre of Denton productions,. as well as participating individually in school activities and talent shows.
DDC Facility
In the spring of 2007, DDC expanded to include another 1800 square feet for a total of 4800 square feet which includes two large studios (30’ X 40’ and 30’ X 30’)with raised wood floors and vinyl marle surfaces, and medium sized studio (30’ X 16’), a small studio (12’ X 14’)a comfortable waiting area for parents and siblings including observation windows, a faculty lounge, and two office spaces.

- DDC students and friends receive our bi-monthly newsletter, "Footnotes", to keep them up to date on studio, local and regional auditions, workshops, performances and other dance news.
- DDC's summer DANCEcamps offer a unique opportunity for children ages 4 to 11 to study not only ballet and jazz, but also dance history, anatomy, nutrition, pantomime, and much much more! A great week of study designed with YOUR child in mind.
- DDC also has developed a wonderful Summer Dance Workshop, for ages 11 through 14, with a minimum of three years of ballet study. This workshop has a focus on Pre-Professional Ballet Training, with a slate of special studies which include, but are not limited to developing a personal training curriculum, working on your personal dance resume, audition tips and directions, careers in dance and the arts, and much more. LISA RACINA-TORRE, Owner/Director of DDC is entering her 22nd year of teaching dance, all levels, serving as Ballet-Mistress at DDC for intermediate, advanced and pre-professional dancers, as well as Artistic Director/choreographer for Denton Youth City Ballet, the studio’s performing company and Denton City Contemporary Ballet, the Conservatory’s affiliate non-profit dance company. Ms. Racina-Torre holds a BFA in Ballet and Modern Dance from Texas Christian University, has served on the summer faculty of Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan in 1993 and 1995, has served as an Adjunct Professor of Ballet at the University of North Texas, and has performed, taught and choreographed professionally for schools and companies throughout the United States. Her dancers have been accepted at numerous prestigious university dance programs as well as summer dance programs throughout the country. |
RACHEL CUMMINGS, graduated from Texas Christian University with her B.F.A in Modern Dance. Rachel began her training with Lisa Racina at Denton Dance Conservatory where she had the opportunity to work with James Clouser, Lesley Snelson-Figueroa and Stephanie Millings. While at TCU, Rachel had the pleasure of working with Susan Douglas Roberts, Elizabeth Gillaspy, Li Chou Cheng and Suki John. Rachel also performed in works by Robert Battle, Christian von Howard, and Susan Douglas Roberts amongst others. At Bates Summer Dance festival Rachel worked with Michael Foley, Robert Battle, and Nancy Starks - Smith. Recently, Rachel has had choreography chosen for PILOT, and emerging choreographers concert and has begun working with Ewert and Company in Dallas. Rachel is thrilled to begin her ninth year teaching for Denton Dance Conservatory, and is also looking forward to continuing her work with Denton City Contemporary Ballet. Rachel plans to continue her dance education while teaching and choreographing. |

JASMINE JARAMILLO, celebrates her 6th year as an instructor at DDC. Jasmine is a Sophomore at Texas Woman’s University, majoring in History, with a Minor in Dance. A former five year student at Denton Dance Conservatory, she studied teaching concepts with Miss Lisa by assisting with DanceCamps over the summers of 2005 through 2009, and has assisted with numerous other classes during her apprenticeship. A principal with Denton City Contemporary Ballet as well as having performed with the Denton Youth City Ballet, Jasmine has danced throughout the Metroplex and is known for her versatility and style in jazz, modern and ballet along with the gentle excitement she brings to her classes. An emerging choreographer, Jasmine has premiered several works with the Denton City Contemporary Ballet and continues to dance, teach and choreograph throughout the Metroplex. |

HANNAH BRIGGS, is entering her sophomore year as a dance major and honors student at Texas Woman’s University. Having danced for the past twelve years at Denton Dance Conservatory, she has had the opportunity to study various genres of dance including ballet, jazz, modern and tap. As a former officer of the Ryan High School Strutters, Hannah also has experience in drill team and has been honored with several awards including All-Star Dancer, Miss Showtime Nominee, and Kick Club Finalist. Hannah has recently finished out her first season as a dancer in the cast of the musical drama, Texas, held every summer near Amarillo. Hannah performed in over 60 shows the choreography of Crystal Bertrand and Jerry Vizena. Now back in Denton, she looks forward to continuing her studies at TWU and sharing a love of dance with her students at Denton Dance Conservatory. |

CHRISTOPHER KOEHL
Born and raised in Texas, Chris began dancing when he was twelve years old in jazz and ballet. It wasn't until the age of sixteen that Chris realized and began to develop his love for hip hop and social dancing. Throughout high school Chris was a dancer with the Dallas Ballet Company, which is a pre-professional ballet company. Chris's training and exposure ranges from hip hop and break dancing to ballet and jazz to musical theatre, lyrical, modern, swing, and even a little African dance. His Training with the Dallas Ballet Center, Revelations Dance Studio and various workshops and master classes, including The ROCK School of Dance in Philadelphia, the Glenda Brown Choreography Project in Kansas, Dance Revolution and Boston Ballet, has afforded Chris many opportunities. Performances include productions with Garland Summer Musicals, Garland Civic Theatre and as a guest artist at Richland Community College. Scholarships Chris has been awarded include: the Natalie Skelton Scholarship by Dallas Dance Council, Dallas Ballet Company Scholarship, Boston Ballet Scholarship, Ballet Austin Scholarship and Dance Revolution Scholarship. Now, at the age of 19, Chris is pursuing his education and his love of dance has now turned into job opportunities to help pay for that education. Christopher Koehl, currently trains and performs with F-Troop, a competition hip hop team that is associated with Revelation Dance Studio. Chris has recently begun teaching for Denton Dance Conservatory’s pilot program at the Nelson Center, and is looking forward to his first year teaching Hip Hop at Denton Dance Conservatory. Chris also teaches at the Revelation Dance Studio, is a gymnastics coach with Lake Highlands ASI Gymnastics, teaches break-dance privately, and is a dance host with Disc Jockeys Etc.

ALLAN KINZIE
Ballet Master and Choreographer
In 2003, Mr. Kinzie accepted a position as Artist in Residence at Southern Methodist University where he set two original creations; “Scenes de Ballet” and “Trauma into Light”. Prior to this appointment, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Oklahoma, Ballet Master and Choreographer for the Oklahoma Festival Ballet and Instructor at Walnut Hill School for the Arts and the Boston Ballet School. His choreographies have been presented in Europe as well as in the United States with a focus on contemporary composers and movement invention. As a performer, he danced leading roles with Boston Ballet, Chicago City Ballet, Ballet Theatre Francais de Nancy, Ballet du Nord and the Dallas Ballet. Mr. Kinzie was accepted to three international competitions and has toured internationally to fifteen countries in over 100 performances with Rudolph Nureyev in his production of Don Quixote. His television credits include guest starring as the Prince in Sleeping Beauty for the 1978, “Christmas at Walt Disney World Special” on NBC. DDC welcomes Mr. Kinzie back for his fourth year teaching ballet technique to Levels VI and VII!!! |

KIHYOUNG CHOI, professional dancer, choreographer, researcher, and teacher, is from Seoul, Korea. She holds a Ph.D. in dance from Texas Woman’s University where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She received M.A. in dance kinesiology, specializing in biomechanical analysis of ballet movements, from Yonsei University. She graduated from Sungkyunkwan University as valedictorian with a B.F.A. in dance. Dr. Choi began her professional dance training in Yewon Art Middle School in Seoul, Korea where she rigorously studied ballet, Korean traditional dance, and modern dance. She has performed as a professional dancer since the age of 12 and performed with the Korean National Ballet Company and Sangmook Chae Traditional Korean Dance Company. Her doctoral study and extensive experience in performance and choreography at local, regional and international venues deepened her cross-cultural sensitivity as well as her teaching philosophy. As a teacher, she strongly believes that teaching dance is not just about teaching technical skills, but rather about creating an empowering classroom where teacher and students can actively interact and collaborate while challenging one another. Dr. Choi is currently teaching various dance theory and studio courses at the University of North Texas and at Tarrant County College as well as dancing with the professional dance company Satellite Dance. |

JOSE ZAMORA José Zamora began his training as a traditional Mexican and Latin American folklorico dancer in La Joya, Texas. After graduating high school, he relocated to Denton, Texas and trained in post-modern dance for four years, receiving his BA in Dance Studies from Texas Woman's University in 2004.
In 2010, Zamora received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Texas Woman's University, where he was also awarded a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship in 2008. This fellowship is awarded by the U.S. Department of Education in selected fields of study in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It is a prestigious award for students who have demonstrated superior academic ability and achievement and exceptional promise. Only 30 people were awarded this fellowship in the United States in 2008-09. With this award, José produced his first evening length contemporary dance concert titled CholoRock, a work inspired by Mexican-American pop-culture and traditions in November 2008. In 2009 and 2010 Zamora toured and has been touring with his company CholoRock Dance Theatre in North and South Texas, as well as in Cholula, Puebla Mexico where he and his company led a residency in La Universidad de las Americas for the second time in April 2010. In April of 2010 Zamora’s choreography Curios y Serpentinas was selected to be showcased at the American College Dance Festivals National Gala concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Mr. Zamora is looking forward to teaching Advanced Jazz and Contemporary classes at Denton Dance Conservatory this coming Fall and Spring 2010-2011! |
